Hřensko

Not far from Děčín and its tiny zoo, there’s a small river and running in between huge sandstone gorges, around the German border, next to a village called Hřensko.

Tout près de Děčín et son zoo rikiki, il y a une petite rivière qui coule au fond d’énormes gorges de grès, pas loin de la frontière allemande, à deux pas d’un village dénommé Hřensko.

The village itself is a single street, stretching along the river, and most of it is either tourist shops held by Vietnamese immigrants, or parking spots for hikers and tourists…

Le village en lui-même n’est qu’une longue rue qui s’étire le long de la rivière, constituée à moitié de magasin pour touristes tenus par des immigrants vietnamiens, ou des places de parking pour touristes et randonneurs…

Speaking of hiking and parking spots, most people go there to see the gorges and take a hike alongside the river. We made the mistake of parking at the entrance of the village, instead of going on all the way to the entrance of the trail, at the other side of the village. Well, a litte walking can’t do much harm, can it? Not when it’s 35°C under the sun, right?

En parlant de randonnée et de parking, la plupart des gens viennent pour les gorges et une ballade au bord de l’eau. On a fait l’erreur de se garer à l’entrée du village, au lieu de continuer jusqu’à l’entrée de la piste, à l’autre bout du village. Bon, un peu de marche ne peut pas me faire de mal, si? Surtout quand il fait 35°C, pas vrai?

Anyways, right when you get there, you can get a taste about what the hike will be all about: cliffs so big that I’lll never to get them all in a single picture, even at my widest angle (if anybody has a Canon EF-S 10-22mm gathering dust in their drawers…).

Enfin bon, en arrivant sur place, on a un avant-goût de ce que va être la rando: des falaises si grandes que jamais je vais arriver à les faire tenir sur une photo, même à mon plus grand angle possible (si quelqu’un à un Canon EF-S 10-22mm qui prend la poussière dans leur tiroir…).

The trail starts with a pub/inn (we’re in Czech Republic after all :D), and a small bridge crossing the Kamenice river, a tributary to the Labe river.

La piste démarre avec un pub/auberge (on est en République Tchèque, après tout :D), et un petit pont qui traverse la rivière Kamenice, un affluent de l’Elbe.

Kamen, in Czech, means stone, so it’d be like the “stones river”.

Kamen, en tchèque, signifie pierre, donc c’est comme “une rivière de pierres”.

The trail follows the river, at the bottom of the gorges. So even under the hot temperatures, most of the hike is spent under the shade.

La piste suit la rivière, au fond des gorges. Donc même malgré les chaudes températures, la plupart de la rando se fait à l’ombre.

I think I’ve been climbing too much. When I see this, I start wondering how safe/hard/fun it would be to climb… 😀

Je pense que j’ai trop fait d’escalade récemment. Quand je vois ça, je commence à me demander dans quelle mesure ce serait sûr/difficile/marrant à grimper… 😀

I would say that swimming there is neither safe nor allowed, so I’m not sure how a croc ended down there…

Je dirais que nager, par ici, n’est ni sûr ni autorisé, donc je sais pas trop comment cette Croc a atterri là…

What’s most peculiar about this trail is that part of it cannot be done by foot, and you must take a ferry ride on some portions.

Le plus particulier à propos de cette rando c’est qu’elle n’est en partie pas faisable à pied, et il faut prendre un ferry sur quelques sections.

Call it a 20mn break/guided tour at the heart of the gorges. The ferrying is done gondola-style, using long poles, “as it’s been done ever since the ferrying started”. It’s ecological, quiet, and lets you take appreciate the view even more.

On va dire que c’est une pause/visite de 20min au cœur des gorges. Le transport se fait dans des genres de gondoles, avec de longues perches, “comme depuis le début de l’ouverture de la piste au public”. C’est écolo, calme, et ça permet d’autant plus d’apprécier la vue.

The drivers/guides all have the same speech, more or less, in both Czech and German, down to the jokes.

Les pilotes/guides ont tous le même discours, plus ou moins, en tchèque et en allemand, à la blague près.

The section we were in were the Edmundova Soutěska (Edmund Gorge). Erosion carved the sandstone cliffs, sometimes making shapes that tourists and tourist guides started naming. This one up here is called “The family”, with, from left to right, the parents, then the kids…

La section où nous étions était l’Edmundova Soutěska (Gorge d’Edmond). L’érosion a creusé les falaises de grès, formant parfois de drôles de formes que touristes et guides ont donc baptisés. Là haut, vous avez “La Famille”, avec, de gauche à droite, les parents, puis la marmaille…

If you didn’t recognize everything, there’s an app a joke for that. As the guide was saying “If you don’t see them, and have a small imagination, you need to have two beers, one shot of Becherovka, and then you will have big imagination” (it sounded even funnier in german than in Czech, for some reason).

Si vous avez pas tout reconnu, il y a une appli blague pour ça. Comme le disait le guide “si vous les voyez pas, et manquez d’imagination, il vous faut deux bières, un godet de Becherovka, et vous aurez une grosse imagination” (et ça sonnait encore mieux en allemand qu’en tchèque, je sais pas pourquoi).

In the “joke” department, he also tried to “scare” the passengers saying this small ladder was actually the end of the ride, with a rest stop up there and a Tesco store.

Au département des blagues carambar, il a aussi tenté de “faire peur” aux passagers en disant que la petit échelle, là, c’était le terminus, avec une aire de repo et un supermarché Tesco tout en haut.

Too bad other boats were coming from further down the river, kinda ruining the effect.

Dommage que d’autres barques passaient dans l’autre sens, ça tue un peu l’effet.

Also, we were shown what the guide dubbed as “our small Czech Niagara Falls”, a small on-demand waterfall… Having experienced the “Maid of the Mist” taking you at the bottom of the Canadian Niagara Falls, I can assure you that this little splash is nothing :p.

Aussi, on nous a montré ce que le guide a appelé “nos petites chutes du Niagara tchèques”, une petite cascade à la demande… Ayant tenté le “Maid of the Mist” qui vous emmène au pied des chutes du Niagara canadienne, j’peux vous dire que là, ça vaut pas tripette :p.

After approximately 20 minutes of ferrying, we reach the end of the section. That small house in the middle of the trees is the kiosk selling postcards and tickets for the ferry. I half expected it to be on legs, walking, with “Baba Yaga” cackling in it…

Après environ 20 minutes de barque, on arrive à la fin de la section. La petite maison au milieu des arbres c’est le guichet avec les cartes postales et les tickets pour le ferry. Je m’attendais à ce qu’elle soit sur patte, se déplaçant, avec une “Baba Yaga” qui ricane dedans…

And just a bit further, before the next trail segment starts, there is a small pub and rest area, where people were having breaks, ranging from grilled sausages with bread and mustard, to ice cream.

Et un poil plus loin, avant le démarrage de la section suivante, il y a un petit pub et aire de repos, où les gens font une pause goûter, allant de la saucisse grillée avec du pain et de la moutarde, aux crèmes glacées.

Also, some people were having a smoke. Something I never understood while hiking or getting out in the nature. You get there, can enjoy the peace and majesty of the place, the fresh and pure air, why ruin the atmosphere for everybody with the smell of cheap cancer sticks?

Il y en avait aussi qui se fumaient une clope. Un truc que je n’arrive pas à comprendre en rando ou en nature. On est là, à profiter de la paix et de la beauté du lieu, de l’air pur et frais, pourquoi pourrir tout le monde avec l’odeur d’un bâton à cancer discount?

Anyways, during the break, I took advantage of passing clouds to experiment a bit with the camera, see how slow I could get the shutter, to get the “milky” effect of the flowing water…

Enfin bon, pendant la pause, j’ai profité d’un passage d’un nuage pour expérimenter avec l’appareil, voir à combien je pouvais baisser la vitesse d’obturation, pour tenter d’obtenir un effet “laiteux” sur la rivière…

Then, we slowly started to head back, since it was already almost the end of the afternoon. While waiting for the ferry, it looks like many a tourist tried to make a wish in the river…

Puis, on a tranquillement rebroussé chemin, vu qu’il commençait à se faire tard. En attendant la barque, on dirait que nombre de gens ont tenté de faire un vœu dans la rivière…

And then we went back where we came from, different boat, same speech…

Et on est repartis d’où on est venus, autre barque, même discours…

Had I known, I probably would have skipped Děčín entirely, and spent the day doing the full trail from Hřensko to Mezní Louka, and maybe see the Pravčická brána on the way (the largest natural sandstone arch in Europe, seen in movies like The Chronicles of Narnia…)…

“Si j’aurais su…”, j’aurais probablement zappé Děčín complètement, et passé la journée à faire la rando de Hřensko à Mezní Louka, pour peut-être voir au passage la Pravčická brána (l’arche de grès naturelle la plus grande d’Europe, vue dans des films comme les Chroniques de Narnia…)…
