You guys know I’m all for diversity. And I, just out of pure fairness, think we should observe all the religious holidays from all the religions out there. I mean, most of the local holidays, be it in Canada or in France, are christian holidays.

Vous savez que je suis à fond pour la diversité. Et, par pur désir d’équité, je pense qu’on devrait observer tous les jours fériés religieux de toutes les religions qu’on connaît. J’veux dire, la plupart des jours fériés, au Canada comme en France, sont des jours fériés chrétiens.

And the more religions you acknowledge, the more holidays you get. Smart, eh? And since we are now in the digital era, so linked to each other, why stop at religions? Just celebrate all local holidays from other countries, other cultures.

Et plus vous reconnaissez de religions, plus vous avez de jours fériés. Pas folle, la guêpe! Et vu qu’on est dans l’ère du numérique, tellement liés les uns aux autres, pourquoi s’arrêter aux religions? Fêtons tous les jours fériés des autres pays, des autres cultures.

Because… you know… I wouldn’t have minded having the day off today, now that we’re entering the Year of the Rat. That’s right! So Chúc mừng năm mới everyone! You should already know your sign, and if not, well, check my post from last year :p.

Parce que… vous savez… Ça m’aurait pas dérangé d’avoir ma journée aujourd’hui, maintenant qu’on démarre l’Année du Rat. C’est vrai! Alors Chúc mừng năm mới tout le monde! Vous devriez déjà connaître votre signe, sinon, ben, relisez mon billet de l’an passé :p.

The Rat is the first sign of the Chinese and Vietnamese Zodiacs. My father once told me why the Rat was the first. The God of Heaven, when it was time for him to decide of the animals for the Zodiac, decided to settle the matter with an animal race. That would determine the 12 animals, and their order in the Zodiac. One would almost immediately “but there is a Tiger in there, surely it is faster than a rat!”. And to that, the answer is “But the Rat is the smartest of all. Knowing that it was too tiny to compete with bigger animals, it would have to be cunning in order to win. So the Rat jumped on the head of the fastest animal, the Ox, and just in front of the finish line, the Rat jumped from the horn of the Ox, and won the race :). That’s why the Rat is the first in the Zodiac, and then comes the Ox…”

Le Rat est le premier signe des Zodiaques Vietnamiens et Chinois. Mon père m’a raconté, une fois, pourquoi le Rat était le premier. Le Dieu du Paradis, au moment de choisir les animaux qui constituerait le Zodiaque, décida de régler l’affaire avec une course d’animaux. Ça déterminerait les 12 animaux, et leur ordre dans le Zodiaque. On pourrait se dire à peu près tout de suite “mais y a le Tigre là dedans, c’est forcément plus rapide qu’un rat!”. Et à cette remarque, la réponse est “Mais le Rat est le plus malin de tous. Sachant qu’il était trop petit pour concurrencer les gros animaux, il lui faudrait user de la ruse pour gagner. Donc le Rat sauta sur la tête de l’animal le plus rapide, le Buffle, et juste devant la ligne d’arrivée, le Rat sauta de la corne du Buffle, et gagna la course :). C’est pour ça que le Rat est le premier dans le Zodiaque, et ensuite vient le Buffle…”

This year will be the third year where I won’t be able to celebrate the Tết with my family. Perhaps I will be able to turn on the webcam and have a remote celebration with them on Sunday :D.

Cette année sera la troisième où je ne serai pas en mesure de fêter le Tết en famille. Peut-être que je pourrai allumer la webcam et le fêter avec eux dimanche :D.
