A head full of stars

This made me realize how big an issue light pollution actually is. I remember, as a kid, being able to see stars in the night sky from the garden of my house. But when I lived in Paris, or Toronto, or here in Prague, the city lights are so strong that you never see the stars anymore. I guess as a backup solution, you just have to rely on the Christmas decorations on the yearly Christmas trees that are planted in those cities. They usually come with a star on top…

Ça m’a fait me rendre compte de l’importance de la pollution lumineuse. Je me souviens, gamin, de pouvoir voir les étoiles dans le ciel depuis le jardin de la maison. Mais quand je vivais à Paris, ou Toronto, ou même ici, à Prague, les lumières de la ville sont si fortes qu’on ne voit jamais plus vraiment les étoiles. J’imagine qu’en guise de solution de secours, on s’en remet aux décorations de Noël sur les arbres plantés partout. Ça vient souvent avec une étoile au sommet…

Singing

Oh boy. This month, Thalie wants us to play guessing games. The theme is “singing” (en chantant). And we are supposed to show you a picture that represents a song, and the audience has to guess. Fun fun fun :). I thought about something from Frozen, at the beginning, but if I put “Let it Go” in your heads you’re going to hate me into next week, at the very least. So I opted for something else.

Oh mazette. Ce mois-ci, Thalie veut jouer aux devinettes. Le thème est “en chantant”. Et on est censés vous montrer une photo qui illustre une chanson, le public doit deviner. Chouette :). J’ai pensé à une chanson de La Reine des Neiges, au début, mais si je vous pourris avec “Libérée, Délivrée” vous allez me haïr jusqu’à la semaine prochaine, au moins. Donc j’ai choisi quelque chose d’autre.

And to cater to my international audience, the song is not a French song. And famous enough that you everybody should know it. I’ll give you a clue: I used the song title for a blog post a long time ago… Have you found it? Take your best guesses in the comments :). Also, I’ll be switching on moderation for today, that people can take some time trying to guess :).

How to stay warm in winter in Prague

Do you remember the Flame Demon picture? Well, I suppose it’s high time I showed you how I ended up taking that picture, don’t you think?

Vous vous souvenez du Démon des flammes? Je pense qu’il est grand temps que je vous montre comment j’ai fait la photo, non?

While in Prague for an evening, I ended up crossing Staroměstké náměsti (Old Town Square) in the middle of the night. The square is always crowded with tourists during the day, and gets a bit quieter at night. The buskers change as well. Gone are the keyboard player that will play “any romantic tune you can think of”. Gone are the giant soap bubble makers. In comes the firebreathing man!

À Prague, un soir, je me suis retrouvé à traverser Staroměstké náměsti (la Place de la Vieille Ville) au milieu de la nuit. La place est toujours bondée de touristes en journée, et s’apaise un peu la nuit. Les saltimbanques changent aussi. Plus de joueur de piano qui vous fera “le morceau romantique de votre choix”. Plus de faiseurs de bulles de savon géantes. Et laissez passer le cracheur de feu!

His words, not mine: “trust me, I’m a professional. I’ve been doing this for 10 years, and I’m still alive!”. After marking the end of his safe zone, whoever was still on the square at that time gathered up, flashing their phones and cameras.

Comme il le dit lui-même: “faites-moi confiance, je suis un professionel. Ça fait 10 ans que je fais ça, et je suis encore en vie!”. Après avoir marqué son territoire, les passants encore présents se sont agglutinés, dégainant téléphones et appareils photos.

This busker came from Poland, and as you can imagine, has a sense of humor, which is half of a good busker show. I thought it would be an interesting exercise as well. Flames + Night photography = potential nightmare. For a start, I knew that any mode other than Manual would not work.

Ce saltimbanque vient de Pologne, et comme vous pouvez le voir, a le sens de l’humour, ce qui fait déjà la moitié d’un bon spectacle de rue. Je pensais que ça serait un bon exercice aussi. Des flammes + de la photo de nuit = un cauchemar potentiel. Déjà, je savais qu’un mode autre que Manuel ne fonctionnerait pas.

The flames are very bright. Expose for the face, and the flames will be overexposed. Expose for the flames, and the faces will be underexposed. And don’t get me started on HDR. You don’t HDR fast moving subjects like a guy juggling with chains on fire.

Les flammes sont très lumineuses. Mesurez l’exposition pour les visages, et les flammes seront surexposées. Mesurez l’exposition pour les flammes, et les visages seront sous-exposés. Et n’allez pas me parler de HDR. On ne fait pas de HDR avec des sujets en mouvement comme un gars qui jongle avec des chaînes enflammées.

Most likely, you’ll have to figure out a kind of middle ground, knowing the flames will be overexposed, but not so much so that you can still see the performer’s features.

Il est plus que probable qu’il vous faille trouver un juste milieu, sachant que vous allez sûrement cramer les flammes, mais pas trop pour pouvoir encore distinguer le saltimbanque.

Trying to follow the show and adjust my settings at the same time was a bit of a nightmare, though. I took advantage of the few slower moments during the show to quickly review my shots and adjust.

Essayer de suivre le spectacle et ajuster mes réglages en direct était un peu galère, quand même. J’ai profité de certains moments de répit pendant le spectacle pour rapidement revoir mes prises et refaire mes réglages.

You also have to anticipate the size of the flames. Juggling, the flames are relatively small within the frame. Fire breathing, though, that’s a huge burst of flame. I thought I had the settings right, then I got this:

Il faut aussi anticiper la taille des flammes. Pendant qu’il jongle, les flammes sont assez petites dans le cadre. Quand il crache du feu, par contre, c’est une énorme gerbe de flammes. Je pensais avoir les bons réglages, puis j’ai eu ça:

50mm, f/2.8, 1/125s, ISO 1600

Thankfully, there is always a small pause between such bursts of fire. Enough time to review and adjust. I had to set my ISO to the lowest possible level, and even then, increase the shutter speed. Such nice flames, I wanted to capture the flames more than the busker himself.

Par chance, entre deux grosses gerbes, il y avait toujours une petite pause. Suffisamment longue pour revoir et ajuster. J’ai mis mon ISO le plus bas possible, et même là, j’ai dû augmenter la vitesse d’obturation. De si belles flammes, je voulais les prioritiser par rapport à l’artiste lui-même.

And this is where I got it right, I think. Notice the two small lights above the head of the busker? Some street lights in the distance. Once I had the settings right for the flames, I framed a picture with “just the flames”. And this is what I ended up with. The street lights in the middle were a pure stroke of luck that made the demon’s eyes.

Et c’est comme ça que j’ai trouvé le bon réglage. Vous voyez les deux lumières au dessus de la tête de l’artiste? Des lampadaires au loin. Une fois que j’avais les bons réglages pour les flammes, j’ai cadré une photo avec “juste la gerbe”. Et c’est ce que j’ai obtenu. Les lumières du lampadaire au milieu étaient un pur coup de chance pour les yeux du démon.

There you have it, folks. In short: consider that the flames will be very bright. Set the camera to manual, take a low ISO, high shutter speed, at least 1/200s, and don’t hesitate to lower the aperture to capture the beauty of the flames.

Et voilà. En clair, considérez que les flammes seront très lumineuses. Mettez votre appareil en mode manuel, basse ISO, court temps d’obturation, au moins 1/200s, et n’hésitez pas à fermer votre ouverture pour bien saisir la beauté des flammes.

Flame Demon

Sometimes, you’re out taking pictures, then you don’t know exactly how it happened, but when you download the pictures on the computer and start sorting them out, a flame demon comes at you…

Des fois, vous êtes de sortie à prendre des photos, puis vous savez pas trop comment ça se fait, mais en ouvrant les photos dans l’ordinateur pour les trier, un démon des flammes vous saute à la figure…

This is a very lucky shot, absolutely no planning or preparation (I was out in the street when I took the shoot), but how do you think I made that happen? Take a guess in the comments 🙂

OK, j’ai eu une veine incroyable, aucune préparation préalable (j’étais dans la rue quand j’ai pris la photo), mais à votre avis, comment j’ai fait? Faites vos jeux dans les commentaires 🙂

Sign of the downfall of the industrial era

This month, it was Alban‘s turn to choose the theme for the Pic of the month, and he chose “Sign of the downfall of the industrial era” (Signe du déclin industriel). I originally thought about showing you the old cement factory in the village that was closed and reused as a paintball ground when I arrived, but it recently got reinstated as a cement factory again. Then I thought about my latest favorite climbing gym, “Big Wall”, which is located inside an old factory and you can still see the machinery in between the climbing routes (and that’s pretty cool). But I don’t have any nice picture that would show both the gym and the machinery. So in the end, I chose this:

Ce mois ci, c’est Alban qui a choisi le thème du mois: Signe du déclin industriel. Au début je voulais vous montrer la vieille usine de béton désaffectée du village, reconvertie en terrain de paintball, mais elle a récemment été rachetée et réhabilitée. Ensuite j’ai pensé à ma dernière salle d’escalade préférée, “Big Wall”, qui se trouve dans une vieille usine désaffectée et on peut encore y voir des machines entre deux voies d’escalade (et c’est pas mal cool). Mais je n’ai pas de bonne photo qui montrerait à la fois la salle et les engins. Au final, j’ai choisi ça:

You’re going to ask me: “how is a gothic revival style château representative of the downfall of the industrial era?”, and if you don’t know the history of Casa Loma, the question is legitimate. The reason is that it never was finished. During the great depression after World War I, Sir Henry Pellat, the industrial and soldier who owned the place was already struggling financially, and when the city of Toronto had to raise taxes, he just couldn’t pay anymore. As a result, the building never was finished, he had to sell assets and furniture, and after being used as a hotel for a time, the city repossessed it.

Vous allez demander: “en quoi un château gothique-renaissance est-il représentatif du déclin industriel?”, et si vous ne connaissez pas l’histoire de Casa Loma, vous aurez raison de vous poser la question. La raison est que le château n’a jamais été terminé. Pendant la Grande Dépression qui a suivi la Première Guerre Mondiale, Sir Henry Pellat, l’industriel et militaire qui avait commandité la construction, était déjà en difficulté financièrement, et quand la ville de Toronto a augmenté les taxes, ce fût le coup de grâce. Du coup, la chantier n’a jamais été terminé, il a dû vendre des biens, et des meubles, et après avoir été utilisé comme hôtel pendant quelques années, la ville de Toronto a saisi la propriété.

Oh, by the way, this is the 1000th post on the blog! Considering that I opened it in preparation of my move to Toronto, it’s only appropriate that I honour one of Toronto’s most famous landmarks, don’t you think? 🙂

Dabbling with Street Photography

I’m not exactly sure I have found my actual style in photography. Well, I do enjoy concert photography quite a bit, that’s one thing. I also love travelling, although I don’t exactly count myself as a travel photographer just yet. Often times I find my travel pictures boring or lacking interest. I know all the composition rules, on paper. I know my camera settings pretty well too. Does that make me a good photographer? I think not. Knowing my camera settings is like “knowing how to use a computer” for a software developer. Doesn’t make you a good developer. But is necessary to help you achieve your potential. I think I need to train my eye more. And to think about my pictures more. So I was thinking, maybe Street Photography is something I should consider. So as an exercise, I tried, from time to time. Today I’ll show you one session from a year ago, from when I tried to actually pay attention to what I was photographing. Let me know what you think about it, what could be better in your opinion, or improved upon. In my next post, I’ll show another series, shot a couple of weeks ago, for comparison.

Je ne crois pas avoir vraiment trouvé mon style photographique. Bon, j’aime la photo de concert, c’est une chose. J’aime aussi voyager, même si je ne me considère pas encore vraiment comme un photographe de voyage. Souvent, je trouve mes photos de voyage un peu insipides. Je connais les règles de composition, sur le papier. Je connais bien les réglages de mon appareil photo, aussi. Est-ce que ça fait de moi un bon photographe? Je ne crois pas. Connaître mon appareil, c’est comme “savoir se servir d’un ordinateur” pour un ingénieur informaticien. Ça n’en fait pas un bon ingénieur. Mais c’est nécessaire pour pouvoir exploiter son potentiel. Je pense que mon œil a besoin d’entraînement. Et de mieux penser mes photos. Du coup je me suis dit: peut-être que je devrais tenter la Photo de Rue. Donc comme exercice, j’ai essayé, de temps en temps. Aujourd’hui je vous présente une série qui a un an, lorsque j’ai commencé à essayer de faire plus attention à ce que je photographiais. Dites moi ce que vous en pensez, ce qui pourrait être amélioré d’après vous. Dans mon prochain billet, je vous montrerai une autre série, prise il y a quelques semaines, pour comparaison.

#1: 0% Commission

There are several things I liked in this picture. In Prague, you often have small passageways crammed with stalls, most often souvenirs and convenience stores. This guy looking at all the “souvenirs” (80% booze, says a lot about what “souvenirs” people get from Prague…), the juxtaposition of the “Museum of medieval TORTURE instruments” and “WC” signs (I guess they’re pretty much one and the same, then?). Or maybe it’s the juxtaposition with 0% Commission sign. Money exchange stalls are everywhere in Prague. Pretty much always saying “0% Commission”. Always having a catch though (the commission is not a percentage but a fixed amount, depending on how much money you exchange at once, rates are terribly biased so that the commission is hidden in the exchange rate, etc…), and some places being openly dishonest with tourists on the basis that if the customer don’t speak Czech, it will be harder for them to complain to the authorities. Money exchange is a medieval torture instrument that belongs in a museum. So I guess what I liked in the picture was the irony I could read in it.

Il y a plein de choses qui m’ont plues dans cette photo. À Prague, il y a de nombreux petits passages bourrés d’échopes, le plus souvent des souvenirs ou des épiceries de quartier. Ce gars qui regarde les “souvenirs” (80% de picole, ça en dit long sur les “souvenirs” que les gens ramènent de Prague…), la juxtaposition des panneaux “Musée des instruments de TORTURE médiévaux” et “Toilettes” (j’imagine que c’est donc la même chose?). Ou bien la juxtaposition avec le panneau “0% Commission”. À Prague, on trouve des bureaux de change partout. Se targuant presque toujours de prendre “0% Commission”. Mais il y a toujours un truc quand même (la commission n’est pas un pourcentage mais une commission fixe, basée sur la fourchette de la somme d’argent échangée, ou alors les taux de changes sont biaisés pour cacher la commission dans le taux de change, etc…), et certains bureaux sont ouvertement malhonnêtes avec les touristes sur la base que si le client ne parle pas tchèque, il lui sera d’autant plus difficile de se plaindre aux autorités. Le change est un instrument de torture médiéval qui devrait appartenir à un musée. Je crois que ce que j’aime dans la photo, c’est l’ironie que j’y lis.

#2 At Attention / Au Garde à vous

In front of Karlův most (Charles Bridge), it’s pretty much impossible to avoid tourists taking pictures of themselves, with whatever device they have at hand. The almost military posture of that one made me smile. And the photographer holding shopping bags and struggling to take a picture with her tablet in a cold november night just added to the scene that made me smile.

Devant le Karlův most (Pont Charles), impossible d’éviter les touristes qui prennent la pose, quel que soit leur appareil disponible. La posture quasi militaire de celle-ci m’a fait sourire. Et la photographe qui tient ses sacs de course et qui lutte pour prendre une photo avec sa tablette en cette froide nuit de novembre rajoute juste un petit quelque chose à la scène qui me fit sourire.

#3 Say Cheese

#4 Final Countdown

I was waiting to cross the street, and noticed that a countdown for pedestrian had been put in place. I tried to find a framing that would satisfy me, and couldn’t find any. Then it occurred to me: “what if, instead of taking a picture of the countdown across the street, I took a shot of the one above my head?”. Instead, I decided to turn around, bend over backwards, focus, snap, done.

J’attendais pour traverser, et j’ai remarqué qu’un compte à rebours pour piétons avait été mis en place. J’ai essayé de trouver un cadrage me plaisant, et n’en trouvai aucun. Puis je me suis dit: “et si, au lieu de prendre une photo du décompte d’en face, je prenais en photo celui au dessus de ma tête?”. À la place, j’ai donc décidé de me retourner, me pencher en arrière, mise au point, clic-clac c’est dans la boîte.

#5 Jaws / Les dents de la mer

There are Thai Massage places all over the center of Prague. And to attract customers, they have one employee standing in the street in silly costumes handing out discount flyers. I’ve seen a Shrek, Santa, and the occasional shark from Jaws…

Il y a des salons de massage Thai un peu partout dans le centre de Prague. Pour attirer le chaland, ils ont un employé qui fait le piquet dans la rue dans un costume débile en distribuant des bons de réductions. J’ai vu Shrek, le Père Noël, et à l’occasion, le requin des Dents de la mer.

#6 Hot wine for a cold evening

In winter, stalls selling hot beverages pop up everywhere in Prague. People mostly consume svařák (mulled wine), with the occasional medovina (hot mead), or hot chocolate. Sellers stand in the street all night waiting for customers. I liked the light shining on him. I felt loneliness. I wanted to sympathize with what was probably a very unrewarding job, and not necessarily very profitable.

En hiver, il y a des stands de boissons chaudes qui fleurissent un peu partout à Prague. Les gens prennent le plus souvent du svařák (vin chaud aux épices), avec à l’occasion du medovina (hydromel chaud), ou du chocolat chaud. Les vendeurs restent toute la nuit à attendre des clients. J’ai aimé la lumière qui l’éclairait. J’ai ressenti sa solitude. Je voulais compatir avec ce qui était sûrement pour lui un travail très ingrat, et pas forcément très rentable.

On the way back to my car, two young girls sitting on the bench, one picked up her guitar, started to play, the other started to sing along. There are always buskers on this street. It’s so common a scene that people just pass them by and ignore them. But their smile stopped me. And the fact that it also stopped that cleaning lady from her gloomy job, just for the time of a song, before getting back to picking up the scraps of papers littering the streets at the end of a busy day.

En direction de ma voiture, deux jeunes filles assises sur un banc, l’une prend sa guitare, commence à jouer, l’autre se met à chanter. Il y a toujours des artistes de rue dans cette rue. C’est si courant que les gens passent à côté sans faire attention. Mais leur sourire m’a arrêté. Ainsi que le fait que ça a aussi arrêté cette agente de nettoyage au milieu de son travail glauque, le temps d’une chanson, avant de se remettre à ramasser les bouts de papiers qui jonchent les rues à la fin d’une journée chargée.

Malá Strana by night

In a recent post, Maïeva over at Photo-tuto.fr gave some advice on urban night photography. Mostly, how to keep the night looking like the night. And her answer lies in Exposure Compensation. Remember? I wrote a bit about what it could do before (here). And also when I was in Prague during the blue hour (there). Well, a week ago I had the chance to go to Prague for a business networking thing that I was invited to. I thought maybe this would be the chance to take a few nice pictures of Hradčany (Prague Castle complex) and the Malá Strana by night, since I still haven’t got any decent night shot of Prague (or not decent enough in my opinion 🙂 ). And what do you know? I did use the same technique that Maïeva would write about a week later. She asked me in the comments whether I’d used Spot Metering or Exposure Compensation. Well, let’s see:

Dans un billet récent, Maïeva de Photo-tuto.fr a donné quelques conseils pour la photographie de nuit en ville. Principalement, comment faire que la nuit ressemble à la nuit. Et sa réponse est: avec la correction d’exposition. Vous vous souvenez? J’ai un peu écrit sur l’utilité de la chose (ici). Et je m’en suis servi quand j’étais à Prague durant l’heure bleue (là). Bon, il y a une semaine, j’ai eu la chance d’aller à Prague pour une soirée de réseautage à laquelle on m’avait invité. Je me suis dit que ça serait l’occasion d’essayer de prendre quelques chouettes photos de Hradčany (le complexe du château de Prague) et de Malá Strana de nuit, vu que je n’ai toujours pas de belles photos nocturnes de Prague (ou pas assez belles à mon goût 🙂 ). Et vous savez quoi? J’ai utilisé la même technique que ce que Maïeva allait raconter une semaine plus tard. Elle m’a demandé en commentaire si j’avais utilisé la correction d’exposition ou bien si j’avais utilisé le mode de mesure “Spot”. Voyons-voir ça:

All right. The answer to the question is I turned exposure compensation down by -1EV. Unfortunately, my camera (Canon EOS T3/1100D) doesn’t have spot metering. It has Evaluative Metering, which takes the whole frame for metering, Center-weighted Average Metering, which takes 60-80% of the frame for metering, and Partial Metering, which takes around 10% of the frame for metering. Partial Metering might have worked, but I would have had to zoom to a part where the brightly lit Hradčany would fill the frame a bit more, expose, lock the exposure, then zoom out, reframe, and shoot. Comparatively, just dialing down the exposure compensation knob a bit, framing, and snapping seemed much faster :).

Voilà. La réponse à la question est que j’ai utilisé la correction d’exposition, avec une valeur de -1 EV. Malheureusement, mon appareil (Canon EOS 1100D/T3) ne dispose pas du mode de mesure spot. Il a le mode Évaluative, qui mesure la lumière sur toute l’image, le mode Moyenne Centrale Pondérée, qui mesure sur 60-80% de l’image, et le mode Sélective, qui mesure sur 10-15% de l’image. Le mode Sélective aurait pu fonctionner, mais il m’aurait fallu zoomer sur une partie éclairée de Hradčany pour remplir un peu plus le cadre, verrouiller l’exposition, puis dézoomer et recadrer ma prise de vue, avant d’appuyer sur le bouton. En comparaison, simplement utiliser une correction d’exposition négative, cadrer, déclencher me semblait beaucoup plus aisé :).

Oh, and I wanted to experiment a bit with my cat zoom. The EF-S 55-250mm f4.0-5.6 is not supposed to be a very fast lens, so probably not so good for low light photography. However I used it with pretty good results in concerts, so maybe it’d turn out ok for night photography of some of Prague’s landmarks across the Vltava. What do you think?

Oh, et je voulais m’amuser un peu avec mon zoom à chats. L’EF-S 55-250m f4.0-5.6 n’est pas censé être un objectif très rapide, donc pas forcément super pour la photo en basse luminosité. Pourtant je l’ai utilisé avec des résultats pas trop mauvais en concert, donc peut-être que ça irait aussi pour des photos de nuit de monuments de Prague par delà la Vltava. Qu’est-ce que vous en dites?

You may think, from how the night looks like on those pictures, that I should have turned the Exposure Compensation dial to maybe -2EV. That would have gotten the sky even darker, that’s for sure. But the reality is that the picture I took matches more closely what my eyes saw. Just like any other major city, Prague is brightly lit at night. This results in a halo where the night isn’t really the night. That’s why you probably can’t see any stars in the sky when you are in Paris. Too much ambient light.

Vous pouvez penser, vu comment la nuit rend sur ces photos, que j’aurais dû pousser la correction d’exposition plus loin, à peut-être -2EV. Le ciel en aurait été plus sombre, c’est sûr. Mais la réalité est que la photo prise correspond plus à ce que voyaient mes yeux. Comme n’importe quelle autre grande ville, Prague est très éclairée la nuit. Cela cause un halo où la nuit n’est pas vraiment la nuit. C’est pour ça que vous ne voyez sûrement jamais les étoiles dans le ciel depuis Paris. Trop de lumière ambiante.

St Vitus Cathedral by night (1/8s, ƒ/5.6, ISO 3200, 163 mm, -1 EV)

And this “ambient light” factor is also apparent if you compare the picture above with the picture below. This is Petřín tower, which is in the middle of the woods on Petřín hill. Not much light around it, per se. The picture was taken with the same Exposure Compensation setting, but you can see that the ambient light, although still present, is less important, and the night sky is a bit darker in that picture.

Et cette lumière ambiante devient encore plus apparente quand vous comparez la photo ci-dessus avec la photo ci-dessous. C’est la tour de Petřín, au milieu des bois de la colline de Petřín. Pas beaucoup de lumière environnante au fond des bois. La photo a été prise avec la même valeur de correction d’exposition, mais vous pouvez voir que la lumière ambiante est moindre, et que le ciel nocturne est un peu plus sombre sur cette photo.
