There was, once again, a great deal of discussion on the group, following the theme’s announcement. Mostly complaints as people were not sure exactly what the whole thing meant. At some point, I argued that one could consider any human achievement, discovery or invention could be considered an innovation, starting from the wheel, and sliced bread, and that we’re technically surrounded by innovations. And while I was looking through my archives, I came across this marvel of innovation. Pure product of the human intellect and of millenia of science, most likely. An incredibly innovative weather station in a small village in the Šumava region, which is self-powering, has zero emissions, and will work under the harshest of environments:

Une fois de plus, le thème a fait couler beaucoup de pixels dans le groupe. Principalement au bureau des plaintes parce que les gens ne savaient pas trop comment prendre le thème, que c’était une fois de plus trop compliqué. À un moment, j’ai émis l’opinion qu’on peut interpréter toute création humaine, découverte ou invention, comme une innovation, à commencer par la roue, et le fil à couper le beurre, et qu’on est techniquement entourés d’innovations. Et en navigant dans mes archives, je suis tombé sur cette merveille d’innovation. Pure produit de l’intellect humain et apogée de millénaires d’avancées scientifiques, au moins. Une station météorologique incroyablement innovante dans un petit village dans la région de Šumava, qui ne requiert aucun apport énergétique externe, au bilan énergétique nul, et fonctionnant dans les conditions les plus sévères:

The main weather indicator, as you can see, is a stone hanging on a chain. As an explanation, the post says:

• If the stone is wet: It’s raining
• If the stone is white: It’s snowing
• If the stone casts a shadow: It’s sunny
• If the stone is moving: It’s windy
• If the stone is moving like crazy: It’s a hurricane
• If you cannot see the stone: It’s foggy
• If the stone is gone: It’s theft
• If the stone is on the ground: It’s vandalism
• If you see two stones: It’s alcoholism (don’t get on your bike)

Le principal indicateur météo, comme vous pouvez le constater, est une pierre au bout d’une chaîne. En guise d’explication, le panneau dit:

• Si la pierre est mouillée: pluie
• Si la pierre est blanche: neige
• Si la pierre projette une ombre: soleil
• Si la pierre bouge: vent
• Si la pierre bouge vraiment fort: ouragan
• Si vous ne voyez pas la pierre: brouillard
• Si la pierre est partie: vol
• Si la pierre est par terre: vandalisme
• Si vous voyez deux pierres: alcoolisme (ne remontez pas sur votre byciclette)

Isn’t it beautiful, what the human mind can come up with? 😀
