I’ve been chosen by magical gnomes

If you’ve clicked on any of the pictures I blogged for the past 6 years or so, you must know that I’m on flickr. For the first time in 6 years, one of my pictures made it to the Explore section. Explore? What’s that, you say? It’s simple: It’s a daily selection of 500 pictures that some magical gnomes at Flickr HQ pick in order to showcase what they think is the best stuff that’s been uploaded for the day. I insist on the “magical gnomes” bit, because how pictures are picked is something of a heavily guarded mystery.
The picture that was chosen? My participation to the FlickrFriday “Repetition” photo challenge.

Pour la première fois en 6 ans, une de mes photos a été choisie pour la section Explore. Explore? Quoi donc, dites-vous? C’est simple: c’est une sélection quotidienne de 500 photos que des lutins magiques au QG de flickr choisissent afin de montrer ce qu’ils considèrent être les meilleurs trucs mis en ligne pendant la journée. J’insiste sur l’aspect “lutins magiques”, parce que la manière dont les photos sont choisies est un secret bien gardé. La photo choisie? Ma participation au thème “Répétition” du défi photo FlickrFriday.

FlickrFriday #15: Repetition – [Explored] (1/13s, ƒ/7, ISO 3200, 55 mm)

Something I took in a hurry on a Sunday night because I wanted it to be taken during the week-end when the theme was announced. I think I got very lucky. I have taken pictures that I like much more, but never got Explored. This one? Took it in a rush. I had the idea of taking some architectural pattern in picture, but didn’t visit anything during the week-end. I thought about a line of dominoes but I don’t have dominoes. Then I thought about my Mahjong game and its nice tiles. Picked up a ruler, ordered them all, and set out to lay them out in a few lines. I wanted to take a shot where you can still see the numbers, and where the tiles would fill the frame completely. I tried using my 55-250mm, my 50mm, I couldn’t get the framing I wanted. In the end, I used the kit lens, the 18-55mm. Only had to do very minimal post-processing (cropping a tiny little bit because my viewfinder has only a 95% coverage so I had more in my picture than what I actually wanted), and fixing the white balance a bit.

Une photo prise à la va-vite un dimanche soir parce que je voulais qu’elle soit prise pendant le week-end où le thème était annoncé. Je pense avoir été bien chanceux. J’ai pris des photos que je trouve bien plus belles, mais n’ai jamais été “Exploré”. Celle-là? Prise à l’arrache. J’avais pensé prendre des motifs architecturaux, mais j’ai rien visité du week-end. J’ai pensé à une rangée de dominos, mais j’ai pas de dominos. Puis j’ai pensé à mon jeu de Mahjong et ses belles tuiles. J’ai pris une règle, les ai triées, puis me suis mis à me faire quelques lignes. Je voulais prendre une photo où on distingue bien les chiffres, et où les tuiles remplissent le cadre. J’ai essayé avec mon 55-250mm, mon 50mm, j’ai pas réussi à avoir le cadrage que je voulais. Au final, j’ai utilisé l’objectif du kit, le 18-55mm. Seulement un post-traitement minimal (recadrage d’un poil parce que mon viseur n’a qu’une couverture à 95%, du coup j’avais un peu trop sur la photo par rapport à ce que je voulais), et corriger un peu la balance des blancs.

Yes, my picture has been taken in a hurry, no fancy strobist stuff, with the most entry-level DSLR of the Canon Line in 2011 (the Canon EOS 1100D), with the 18-55mm Kit Lens, and very little post-processing. I consider myself an amateur and on almost every picture I take, I always can see room for improvement. And it still made it to the Explore section of flickr. I’m pretty happy about it, kinda couldn’t believe it either when I saw some people commenting “congrats on explore” on the picture (you don’t get notified when one of your pictures makes it to the Explore section).

Oui, ma photo a été prise à l’arrache, pas de trucs strobistes compliqués, avec le boîtier le plus basique de la ligne de DSLR Canon de 2011 (le Canon EOS 1100D), avec l’objectif 18-55mm du kit, et très peu de post-traitement. Je me considère un amateur et sur quasiment toutes mes photos, je vois toujours des améliorations possibles. Et c’est quand même arrivé jusqu’à la section Explore de flickr. Je suis pas mal content, je n’y croyais pas trop non plus quand j’ai reçu les premiers commentaires “félicitations pour Explore” sur la photo (flickr ne vous notifie pas quand une de vos photos apparait dans la section Explore).

So to all aspiring photographers out there who think gear is everything: No it’s not. You can take nice pictures with basic equipment, a bit of intuition and a touch of luck. Go out and get shooting, have fun with your camera, that’s all there is to it :).

Alors à tous les aspirants photographes ici et là qui pensent que le matos fait tout: Non, il ne le fait pas. On peut prendre de belles photos avec l’équipement de base, un poil d’intuition, et de la chance. Sortez et prenez des photos, éclatez-vous avec votre appareil, c’est la clef du succès :).
