Steakhouse Orchestra vs Coolers, Starter LIVE XT3

I’ve got this friend who’s got a band… And I happened to learn through a former band member that said friend was going to play in a “battle of the bands” style competition, in a club in Prague. I never had the chance to hear them play live (youtube vids don’t count :p), and I happened to need to run some errands in the big city as well. That’s how I ended up at the XT3 club for their Starter LIVE competition.

J’ai un ami qu’a un groupe… Et j’ai appris par le biais d’une ancienne membre dudit groupe que ledit ami allait jouer dans une compétition type “battle of the bands”, dans un club de Prague. Je n’avais pas encore eu la chance de les entendre live (les vidéos youtube ça compte pas :p), et il se trouvait que j’avais besoin de trucs dans la grande ville aussi. C’est ainsi que je me suis retrouvé au club XT3 pour leur compétition Starter LIVE.

Facebook said it was starting at 8PM. So I showed up at 8PM. Looks like I was a bit early, though, as my friend’s band, SteakHouse Orchestra, was still doing their sound checks. Which is convenient for the pictures, actually, on account of providing a better lighting :p.

Facebook disait que ça commençait à 20h. Donc je suis arrivé à 20h. J’étais un poil en avance, par contre, vu que le groupe de l’ami, SteakHouse Orchestra, était encore en pleins réglages. Enfin c’est pratique pour les photos, du coup, vu qu’il y a une meilleure lumière :p.

But I didn’t have to wait too long for the show to start. The style felt like an indie mix of rock and electro. The tunes were catchy, some of the lyrics were also pretty funny (they sing in English, easier for me to understand), but above all, there was something about the music… You can’t put your finger on it, but before you know it, your head starts bobbing, your feet start tapping, and you just get caught in it.

Mais je n’ai pas eu à attendre bien longtemps pour que ça commence. Le style est plutôt un mélange indé rock et électro. Les chansons entraînantes, certaines paroles pas mal drôles (ils chantent en anglais, plus facile pour moi de comprendre…), mais par dessus tout, il y avait un truc à propos de leur musique… J’arrive pas à mettre le doigt dessus, mais sans s’en rendre compte, on se retrouve à dodeliner de la tête, à taper du pied, et on est juste embarqué dans tout ça.

There were only two bands playing that night. The second one is called Coolers. The website puts them in the “pop/rock” category. I beg to differ. During the sound check I could get an idea of what musical genre they were.

Il n’y avait que deux groupes qui jouaient ce soir-là. Le second s’appelle Coolers. Le site les classe dans la catégorie “pop/rock”. Je ne suis pas d’accord. Pendant les réglages son j’ai pu avoir une petite idée de leur genre musical.

Based on that, I was half-expecting them to come on stage dressed in school uniforms, AC/DC style. Bullseye…

De ce que j’avais entendu, je m’attendais à moitié à les voir débarquer sur scène en uniforme d’écoliers, à la AC/DC. En plein dans le mille…

In terms of sound, it sounded pretty much exactly like Limp Bizkit, only in Czech. (And I wouldn’t put Limp Bizkit in the “pop/rock” category…)

Niveau son, c’était un peu exactement comme du Limp Bizkit, mais en tchèque. (Et je ne classerais pas Limp Bizkit dans la catégorie “pop/rock”…)

The lead singer was… unsettling. Mac Lesggy (scientific host show for kids very popular in the 90s in France) look-alike, he was always smiling when he was singing. Doesn’t really match with the angry tone they are trying to set with their music…

Le chanteur était… intriguant. Sosie de Mac Lesggy, il souriait tout le temps quand il chantait. Ça ne colle pas tout à fait avec le ton énervé qu’ils essayaient de donner avec leur musique…

Oh, and the drummer? Totally looks like Ron in the Harry Potter movie franchise. It was uncanny :D.

Oh, et le batteur? Le portrait craché de Ron dans les films d’Harry Potter. C’était impressionnant :D.
