Les Nuits @ Jardin Botanique, BXL

In May each year, there are series of concerts in the Jardin Botanique, in Brussels. Luckily:

I happen to have a colleague very much into indie music who told me about those and offered to buy tickets on my behalf.

I hadn’t been to a concert in ages. Actually, the last concert I went to was to see one of my colleagues and his band, in Paris, shortly after I came back from Toronto. So I gladly accepted the invite, not knowing any of the bands’ names (it wouldn’t be indie music if they were mainstream, now, would it? 😉 ), and set off to see Twin Shadow, Fastlane Candies, Esben and the Witch, and Holy Ghost! for their May 22nd performance in Brussels!

Je ne suis pas allé à un concert depuis une éternité. En fait, le dernier concert où je suis allé, c’était pour voir un collègue et son groupe, à Paris, un peu après mon retour de Toronto. Donc j’ai accepté avec plaisir, ne connaissant aucun des groupes (ça serait plus de la musique indé s’ils étaient connus, si? 😉 ), et suis allé voir Twin Shadow, Fastlane Candies, Esben and the Witch, et Holy Ghost! pour leur concert du 22 mai à Bruxelles!

Actually, I was late in finding the entrance and missed Fastlane Candies, and came during Esben and the Witch’s performance. I’m not sure what to think about the music. It was… peculiar. Maybe because I’m not used to the non-conventionality and the “rock festival” volume settings anymore. But I had a very good time. At first I didn’t take my new camera with me. I was thinking I’m still not used to it, and probably wouldn’t manage good enough pictures, especially in the low light levels that were there. But I could see people taking pictures with their blackberries, their iPhones, blurry shots on a phone, etc… And I thought: well, I’m never gonna improve if I don’t practice. So between the intermission before the last band, Holy Ghost!, starts to play, I ran back to the hotel, grabbed my camera, ran back to the concert, sneaked to the front, cranked the ISO up to 1600, kept the angle as wide as possible so that the camera can use the widest possible aperture and use a decent enough shutter speed, and as soon as the music started, started shooting.

En fait, j’ai eu du mal à trouver l’entré et ai loupé Fastlane Candies, et suis arrivé pendant qu’Esben and the Witch était en train de jouer. Je ne sais pas trop quoi penser de la musique. C’était… particulier. Peut-être que je ne suis plus habitué au non-conventionnel et aux volumes sonores au réglage “festival de rock”. Mais j’ai passé une super soirée. Au début, je n’avais pas pris mon appareil. Je me disais que je n’étais pas assez rôdé avec, et que je n’arriverais pas à prendre de bons clichés, surtout avec la faible luminosité. Mais je voyais des gens prendre des photos avec leurs Blackberries, leurs iPhones, des trucs tout flous sur leur téléphone, etc… Et je me suis dit: bon, j’vais jamais faire de progrès si je ne m’exerce pas. Donc à l’entr’acte avant que le dernier groupe, Holy Ghost!, n’entre en scène, j’ai couru jusqu’à l’hôtel, ai attrappé mon appareil, ai recouru jusqu’au concert, me suis faufilé devant, monté l’ISO à 1600, gardé le plus grand angle possible pour que l’appareil puisse pousser l’ouverture au max et utilise une vitesse d’obturation correcte, et dès que la musique a commencé, j’ai commencé à mitrailler.
