You haven’t changed a bit! / T’as pas changé d’un poil!

When I came back to TO, the first reaction of several of my colleagues (including my former boss) were: “Wow, you haven’t changed a bit!”. That genuinely puzzled me. It hasn’t even been two years since I left, what were they expecting? Somehow, it seems that some people expected me to grow a giant pot belly and grey hair as soon as my work permit expired two years ago. Were I 50 and had I left for 10 or 15 years, ok, that would have made sense. Being only a bit more than half that, and having left for just a year and a half, not sure it still applies… 🙂

En revenant à TO, la première réaction de plusieurs de mes collègues (mon ancien chef itou) furent: “Vache! T’as pas changé d’un poil!”. Ça m’a drôlement étonné. Ça fait pas deux ans que je suis parti, ils s’attendaient à quoi? Apparemment, certains s’attendaient à ce qu’il me pousse un énorme ventre à bière et des cheveux blancs dès l’instant où mon permis de travail a expiré il y a deux ans. Si j’étais quinqua et que j’étais parti depuis 10 ou 15 ans, ok, pourquoi pas. Mais n’étant qu’un peu plus que la moitié de ça, et n’étant parti qu’un an et demi, pas sûr que ça soit valable, comme raisonnement… 🙂

Some things have changed, though. Half of the staff in the office has left since I went back to Europe. Monday morning breakfasts have been discontinued (and I really liked getting free breakfasts on Monday mornings…). The nice lucky bamboo I left behind me in the office passed hands thrice, and one of the stalks were dead when I came back.

Il y a des choses qui ont changé, quand même. La moitié du personnel est partie depuis que je suis rentré en Europe. Les petits déjeuners du lundi matin ont été supprimés (et pourtant j’aimais bien les petits déjeuners gratuits du lundi matin…). Les bambous que j’ai laissé au bureau ont changé de main trois fois, et une des pousses étaient mortes quand je suis revenu.
