We spotted those at J-Town, this week-end, and I find them so cute! So apparently, the top right corner reads “happy fukurou”, which means “happy owl”, and the bottom right corner says “happy usa-chan”, that can be roughly translated as “happy lil’ bunny”.
On a vu ces p’tits machins à J-Town, ce week-end, et je les trouve trop mignons! Bon, apparemment, en haut à droite on peut lire “happy fukurou”, qui veut dire “joyeuse chouette”, et en bas à droite il est écrit “happy usa-chan”, qui peut se traduire grossièrement en “joyeux lapinou”.
I’d be most interested in getting more information about these… If any highly cultured folks know what it is, please comment!

for my favorite reader, i emailed this entry to my japanese friend, chiaki, and asked if she could explain these little things. here is what she tells me:
We do have some superstition related with animals in Japan.
Some of few examples are; putting gold small turtle in the wallet brings money or decorating a porcelain-made cat sticking out his right hand in the air brings more client to the business.
Hence, what the picture shows are mascots.
So, what I can see and assume from the photo, they are those kind of superstitious mascots for fun.
Each one of them has colors like yellow, pink and green etc.
It says ones yellow is for money, pink for love, green for health.
What it means is; if you have those little mascots of your preferred color at your home, your wish may come true. If you want to be rich, get yellow one, asking for better health for green.
We, Japanese adore these kind of little things as you can see very authentic and traditional Japanese cuisine is miniature pieces.

Deux gros chats mauve avec une boule de couleur différente entre les pattes, deux plus petits petits, et un que ma cousine m’a offert y’a pas trop longtemps, de taille entre les deux, je sais plus ce qu’elle disait, mais c’était effectivement un porte bonheur il me semble

tien je n’ai pas vu ça! Je sais que la chouette est censée être un porte-bonheur, et le chat pour la fortune (on les voit dans les resto japonais, avec la patte levée pour faire rentrer les clients). Lapin pour l’amour peut-être.
Je ne savais pas la signification des couleurs par contre!
Je vais faire plus attention si je vois des p’tites babioles comme ça ici!
