Jospin Président!

Last Winter, my “back to France” trip was not only a “back to France” trip. Of course, I spent the usual Christmas time with my family, but right after Christmas, I was headed straight to Praha, Česká republika, where I would spend the rest of the year.

L’hiver dernier, mon “voyage en France” n’était pas qu’un “voyage en France”. Bien sûr, j’ai passé l’habituel temps de Noël en famille, mais pile après Noël, je suis parti direct vers Praha, Česká republika, où j’ai passé le reste de l’année.

Right after boarding my flight, and bidding farewell to a retired Concorde, the bad weather made me read the little airline magazine.

Peu après avoir embarqué, et ayant dit au revoir à un Concorde à la retraite, le temps maussade m’a fait lire le petit magazine de la compagnie aérienne.

My Czech knowledge being even more inexistant at the time than it is now, I was reading the english part. Good thing those magazines are always bilingual. After an interesting article about one of the country’s valuable assets (read: Taťána Kuchařová, Miss World 2006), I stumbled upon another article, about the A380, where I discovered, to my great surprise, that the guy who I thought lost the primaries during the French Presidential Elections of 2002 somewhat managed to become president, and these 5 years thinking Jacques Chirac had been reelected had just been a bad dream.

Mes connaissances en tchèque étant encore plus inexistantes à l’époque qu’elles ne le sont maintenant, je lisais la partie en anglais. C’est bien que ces magazines soient toujours bilingues. Après un article intéressant sur l’un des atouts majeurs du pays (comprendre: Taťána Kuchařová, Miss Monde 2006), je suis tombé sur un autre article, à propos de l’A380, où j’ai découvert, à ma grande surprise, que le gars qui dans mon souvenir avait perdu au premier tour des Présidentielles de 2002 avait je ne sais trop comment réussi à devenir président, et que ces 5 ans à croire que Jacques Chirac avait été réélu n’avaient été qu’un mauvais rêve.

Lionel Jospin, former French President?! Mwah ah ah ah ah. That came as quite a shock. I wonder why nobody told me. Worried that the CSA journalists might have made some sort of diplomatic breach or something, I then decided to have a look at the Czech version of the article…

Lionel Jospin, ancien Président Français?! Mouah ah ah ah ah. Ça m’a fait un choc. Je me demande pourquoi personne ne m’a prévenu. Soucieux que les journalistes de la CSA aient fait un genre d’incident diplomatique ou un truc du genre, j’ai donc décidé de regarder la version tchèque de l’article…

There. Much better. předseda vlády being czech for Prime minister. So we didn’t rewrite history there, it’s just a case of bad translation. I wonder how nobody noticed when reviewing before publication, though.

Voilà. C’est mieux. předseda vlády étant le tchèque pour Premier Ministre. Donc on n’a pas refait l’histoire, là, c’est juste une mauvaise traduction. Je me demande comment personne n’a tiqué à la relecture avant publication, quand même.

PS: no, I didn’t know what předseda vlády meant. I took the picture so that I could ask to someone who new :p.

PS: non, je ne savais pas ce que předseda vlády signifiait. J’ai pris la photo pour pouvoir demander à quelqu’un qui savait :p.
