Liberty Island

Last day of our trip, we decide to go for one of the most famous attractions in New York City:

To get tickets to go to Liberty Island, there’s quite a lineup (especially on a Sunday morning in july). The wait would have been way worse if we had to wait without amazing street performers… These guys, for their finale, put 4 people of the audience, line them with two other people of their crew at each end, bend them, and…

Pour obtenir des tickets vers Liberty Island, il y a une sacrée file (surtout un dimanche matin de juillet). L’attente aurait pu être largement pire si on avait eu à attendre sans d’impressionnants artistes de rue… Ceux-là, pour leur final, on pris 4 personnes du public, les ont alignés avec deux membres de l’équipe à chaque bout, les ont penchés, et…

After the lineup for the tickets, we had to enter the even longer lineup for the ferry. Everybody got searched, and I had to remove my shoes to get them X-rayed, eventually… Around lunch time, we were finally on the ferry that goes from the ferry docks to Liberty Island, to Ellis Island, and back.

Après la file pour les tickets, on a entamé la file encore plus longue pour le ferry. Tout le monde s’est fait fouiller, et j’ai dû enlever mes chaussures pour les passer aux rayons X, au final… Vers l’heure du déjeuner, on était enfin sur le ferry qui va des quais à Liberty Island, puis Ellis Island, et revient.

Ellis Island is famous for being THE place where all immigrants had to stay when arriving in the USA from overseas, while waiting to be allowed in the country. I remember reading articles about life conditions in there, and it was not exactly something I’d recommend…

Ellis Island est célèbre pour être L’Endroit où tous les immigrants avaient à rester en arrivant aux USA d’outre-atlantique, en attendant d’être admis sur le territoire. Je me souviens avoir lu des articles sur les conditions de vie là-bas, et c’était pas quelque chose que je recommenderais…

After some time we finally came closer to Liberty Island.

Après quelques temps, on s’est enfin rapprochés de Liberty Island.

Some passengers, noticing our frenchyness, told us that this was a great gift that France gave them. How could we not agree with that? XD

Quelques passagers, remarquant notre françaisitude, nous ont dit que c’était un super cadeau que la France avait fait. Comment ne pas être d’accord avec ça? XD

The boat circled a little around the island… Letting us see the side of the Statue…

Le bateau a fait un peu le tour de l’île… Nous laissant voir le côté de la Statue…

And when you arrive on the island, you approach it from the back…

Et en arrivant sur l’île, on l’approche par derrière…

And finally we got to see the lady’s face 🙂

Et on a finalement réussi à voir la tête de la dame 🙂

For obvious anti-terrorist reasons, it’s not possible to go up the tower anymore. You can still visit the pedestal, but that’s about it. And you have to book it online, several days in advance. Soooooo… we didn’t do it.

Pour des raisons évidentes d’anti-terrorisme, impossible de monter en haut de la tour. On peut quand même visiter le piédestal, mais c’est tout. Et faut réserver en ligne, plusieurs jours à l’avance. Doooooonc… on l’a pas fait.

The view was as good, and the area was probably less crowded…

La vue était bonne de même, et le coin était sûrement moins bondé…

And when you’re inside the tower, how can you take pictures of it?

Et à l’intérieur de la tour, comment la prendre en photo?

I’ve seen lots of souvenir shops, selling little replicas of the Statue, and everything… and there were several different versions of what text was written on there… Here is the real stuff.

J’ai vu plein de boutiques de souvenirs, vendant des p’tits modèles réduits de la Statue, et tout… et il y avait plusieurs versions du texte inscrit dessus… Voilà la chose.

So if you see a statue where it’s written something else than “July 4th 1776” in Roman digits, then something’s wrong :p.

Donc si vous voyez une statue où c’est écrit autre chose que “4 juillet 1776” en anglais et en chiffres romains, quelque chose cloche :p.

Pretty nice for a last view of the Big Apple :). We didn’t have much more to do in there, so we headed back to Manhattan, and while the ferry was nearing the docks, we spotted a familiar face…

Pas mal pour une dernière vue de la Grosse Pomme :). On n’avait plus grand chose à faire là, donc on s’en est rentrés sur Manhattan, et alors que le ferry s’approchait des quais, on a repéré une tête familière…

Time for the last errands, some white chocolate kit kat for a friend (you can’t find them in Canada), stamps, and we hopped on the subway for one last ride…

C’est l’heure des dernières emplettes, un peu de kit kat chocolat blanc pour une amie (on peut pas les trouver au Canada), des timbres, et on saute dans le métro pour un dernier trajet…
