Without being a hardcore environmentalist that will put sugar in your SUV’s gas tank, I’ve always been environmentally conscious. I despise people who would take their car to buy bread at the bakery at the corner of the street. And unless really necessary, I’d rather take the transports than drive. Not that I don’t like driving, I actually enjoy it very much.

I got my license 7 years ago, while I was still studying. When you’re going to look for an internship, and then for a job, if you’re not in Paris or in the center of a big city, the driver’s license and car quickly become mandatory to even get the interview. For my first and third internships, I needed to drive, and thus was borrowing my mother’s car. Then, I started working in Paris. Working in the center of Paris, living close to the RER, I didn’t need a car for everyday use. And for trips, the now ex-gf had her Twingo that she would drive and let me sit in.

Then, I went to Toronto, and was working downtown, and living downtown. I didn’t need a car for everyday use. And for trips, I would rent a car for the week-end, much cheaper than buying one, paying the insurance, and everything. I’ve put off buying a car for as long as I possibly could.

And when I was thinking about it, I always was thinking I’d buy a “clean” car, like an hybrid, or something like that.

Now that I’m back in Paris, I’m still using the transports for the commute. Driving would actually take me the same amount of time, or even more. But for trips, the “renting” solution can quickly get really pricy. Compared to Toronto, renting for a week-end is approximately twice as expensive (can be more, if the rental company runs out of cheap cars for the week-end). Of course, there are cheap discount rentals, but those usually require booking one month or so in advance, because they’re always sold out otherwise.

So I’ve been looking for a car. And that’s when reality kicks in. Rather, that’s when the price tag quickly jumps on your face, and your wallet starts to weep in your pocket. Oh, and I know that the French government is offering lots of discounts and incentives to make you buy new cars, and even green ones. Yeah, I know that. But it only really works when you already *have* a car that you agree to resell to the dealer. Kinda sucks, doesn’t it?

So in the end, I didn’t get a shiny hybrid car. I got a five years old car, gas, not diesel, that’s not gonna help me save the planet. Well, to make me feel any better, since it’s a second-hand car, there was no carbon used to produce it again, nor to ship it again from a country far far away…

And here is the last post of my 2008 summer trip around the Georgian bay. After the Manitoulin Island, and if you look on the map, you’ll see that there aren’t many more places to go on the way back… And after a few hours of driving, right before entering Killarney Provincial Park, a fox decided to cross the road.

There are a few provincial parks between Manitoulin and Toronto, and if I chose Killarney, it’s because it was supposed to be a great spot for… learning Canoe! So after a good night’s sleep, let’s head over to George Lake for a canoe initiation.

It’s not that I was afraid or anything, just that usually, on a boat, I’m looking at the scenery, not exactly working in the engine room. Last experience I had with operating a boat, it was just simple rowing in Central Park. So if I were to do paddle for the first time in my life, I wanted a teacher, and an easy spot. I wasn’t exactly planning to cross the bay by myself. The teacher was great, and while paddling, explained the color of the water, and the geological formations around George Lake.

She even took the group to one of those “there’s no path for this on the map, but it’s ok, I’m a ranger” spots… So we left the canoes down below,

we climbed up a little bit, careful not to trip over the chipmunks,

and enjoyed the view over George Lake…

On our way back, she showed us a very popular spot for swimming, asking whether we wanted to go swim. Unfortunately for me, I didn’t have my swimsuit, and I’m not the kind of guy to go to the “Clothes Optional” beaches of Toronto Islands. Oh, and I’m also shy in front of frogs.

All in all, the lesson lasted during all morning, so after a quick lunch, there was plenty of time left to do a small hike in the woods before going home. The Cranberry bog trail looked nice. If anyone can recognize this bird, I’d be happy to learn:

There were also some more chipmunks on there.

And although I knew what cranberries were, I didn’t know what ‘bog’ meant in English, and that cranberries grew in those.

The trail is very nice, goes under the trees most of the time, so it’s not blazing hot, and it ends with a great view over George Lake… again .

Sorry for the long silence, I’m pretty busy lately. So let’s resume our trip, shall we? After a very very short night in a little camping not far from the Bruce Peninsula National Park, time to wake up even before sunlight and drive up to Tobermory, where a ferry and many many other cars will be there, for a one way trip to the Manitoulin Island.

While I was on the ferry, I picked up a couple of sightseeing leaflets, looking for hiking trips to do around there. After all, it’s the largest fresh water island in the world, there has to be some hiking trails in there . And in the end, I picked the Cup and Saucer trail. It’s a trail located on the Manitoulin extension of the Niagara escarpment, which means high cliffs, great views, and there’s even an adventure path for those who dare! There are even several trails within the trail, so you could hike there for 15 minutes or even 4 hours. Just in case, always take a good supply of water, you never know, and here we go!

After a not so stiff climb, you can reach several viewpoints, with a great view over the Island.

As you can see, the trail and the island really are covered in trees, which provide a nice shade while walking…

But as usual, watch your step, you never know what’s lying on the ground…

Of course, I had a go at the adventure trail, but unfortunately for you, there’s no pictures of my adventurous self climbing up (and down) shaky wooden stairwells and unstable ladders. One piece of advice, though: If you really want to do it, don’t carry a big backpack with you, and don’t be overweight. There are places you won’t be able to go through if you’re not fit.

But the trail was fun, and can keep you busy for a good part of the afternoon. On my way out, I went to check Bridal Veil Falls, which actually were very touristic (much more than the Cup and Saucer trail, go figure…), and where plenty of people were bathing. I was expecting something nice, and quiet, and went away a bit disappointed. It really is a nice fall, but only without the people screaming and bathing around.

Next time, last part of the Trip, Killarney Provincial Park…

Following up on the first part of the trip around the Georgian Bay area… I told you we’d go to the Bruce Peninsula National Park, next, so here goes.

The Bruce Peninsula National Park is pretty huge, and you could spend several days among its numerous trails. But if you can only spend one day there, definitely go for the Marr Lake Trail, it’s a pretty easy trail, and will keep you busy for the whole afternoon.

I didn’t go during the orchids season, unfortunately, but managed to see quite a few plants that were not so common for me, and also some wildlife… First, I could see what trillium berries looked like. Well, according to the shape of the leaves, I think it’s a trillium. If anybody knows better, feel free to enlighten me

Under the shades of the trees, you may spot garter snakes, but don’t worry, this one is ok. In Ontario, the only dangerous snake is the Massasauga Rattlesnake, and its an endangered species. So I’ll give you a piece of advice: watch where you walk, and closed trekking shoes.

After some time under the shade of the trees, I reached the shore of the Georgian bay.

After playing with the panorama functions on my camera, it was time to play with the macros. This spider, for example, printed on a 10×13cm picture, would actually be bigger than the real thing

And this pickerel frog would look just the right size

The trail, which is actually partially merged with the Bruce Trail, follows the shore, unveiling cliff after cliff, overlooking beautiful water.

In the middle of the rocks, some twisted tree trunks managed to grow, in an odd shape…

And maybe I’ll have to take back the “pretty easy trail” part… :p

While the trail went a little inlands again, I saw an odd plant. Well, I wasn’t even able to say if it really was a plant. Without any color, it looked more like a mushroom, you see?

Turns out it is called an Indian Pipe around here, and it really is a flower . Later on, the trail goes back to the cliffs. Eroded archways of granite can lead to a small cave where lots of people were bathing.

I guess that if you managed to reach the place, you deserved to bathe there ^^. That’s pretty much where the trail ended for me, as it was getting late, and the ferry would be quite early, the following morning. OK, one last glance over the bay, and I’m gone.

Next time, we’ll take the ferry in Tobermory, and go to the Manitoulin island…

Wednesday morning, I was not feeling at 100%. I blamed it on the strenuous work routine from the past few weeks. Long hours, lack of sleep, and the fact that I don’t smoke and that windows don’t open in skycrapers so I have to breathe air in a can during my work time can be an excellent reason for a small headache.

I went through the day as usual, but during the night, felt the usual symptoms of “uh-oh, it’s not just a headache”. Shivering even under the blanket, fever, headache. Woke up not feeling too well, and considering the current context, called the doctor for an appointment. “Not taking patients on Thursday mornings”. Can’t I go to another doctor, then? According to the procedure… No. Or else, I’m not gonna get reimbursed as much by the French Welfare. I could go to the ER, then, but the government urges people not to crowd ERs for flu-like symptoms.

Oh well. I already had warned my boss and the project manager that I wasn’t feeling too well, and that I might work remotely if things don’t go better. I sent the team an email to warn them that I wouldn’t come to the office.

Bon.

At 1:45PM, I went to the doctor’s office, and after the usual hour of waiting, he took me in. Asks me a few questions, and then decides to take no chances. He puts me on sick leave for 4 days, and prescribes paracetamol (acetaminophen for my North American readers) and ibuprofen against the headaches, and a box of masks to wear when I am amongst people. Of course, I’m not allowed to go out until I’m not under quarantined anymore.

I ask whether or not some blood tests are necessary to confirm whether it’s the flu, and/or which one it is. He laughs at me and says he wish, but nothing is ready yet. Labs aren’t ready for blood tests, vaccines aren’t here, and starts ranting about the whole thing. Oh well.

Bah.

So I go home with my painkillers and paper ninja masks, and start wondering: “if you’re not allowed to go out during the whole quarantine time, which can last up to 7 days, how do single or elderly people get to eat?” I mean, people don’t usually store more than one week’s worth of food. And if you can’t go out, or not be in contact with people… (Try wearing the mask in public, and welcome to Panickland). Oh well.

Bah.

I notified my office as well of the doctor’s diagnosis, much to the disappointment of my hierarchy. Y’see, we’re a bit late on the project, as can often happen in the industry. And I was working on some crucial piece that was due… like… last week. I know nobody’s irreplaceable, but out of the 3 people working on that project with me in Paris, 3 are on vacation right now. Kinda sucks when the last egg of your basket gets a virus, doesn’t it? And I know that my bosses won’t force me to work while I’m recovering. But I know they’d be crazy happy if I took advantage of the capability of working remotely that we have. I also got some comforting emails from the colleagues saying I was stupid to get sick just before a week-end .

I don’t know if it was the H1N1 or just flu symptoms, or even the real flu. I got something like that last year in TO, and all I needed was to stay in bed for a day, and then I already was better. Same thing this year. I will work from home for a couple more days, just to be on the safe side in case I’m still contagious, but after one day I was already feeling better.

These masks are really uncomfortable. Like breathing your own breath again. Gross.

Beurk.

In August 2008, I took advantage of a long week-end to rent a “small car”, throw in my brand new tripod and camping gear, and ride around the Georgian Bay.

I took advantage of some summer sales, and got convinced by a clerk at Black’s to buy the “famous branded” tripod that was for sale at the price of the “cheap thingie possibly made in China” that was sold at BestBuy. Light, compact, with water levels to keep the camera perfectly horizontal, air-cushioned rotation platform… Honestly, I came out of the shop thinking it could do everything, including coffee. First stop in the Georgian bay, ten minutes to set it up and level it, and I finally made my first attempt at a tripod-assisted panorama (Click on the picture to go to the flickr page, and see bigger versions).

Not too bad, but I guess the ducks swimming there couldn’t care less.

Trying to follow the road closest to the shoreline, so as to best enjoy the scenery, I discovered the limits of old non-up-to-date GPS units… Basically, when you follow a road and the GPS tells you to keep driving when there’s a wall in front of you, you start thinking the GPS is not updated very often… And try asking the bears for direction, I dare you.

A few U-turns later, I managed to reach Lion’s Head. Its pristine waters were amazing.

Quelques demi-tours plus tard, j’ai réussi à atteindre Lion’s Head. Ses eaux translucides étaient superbes.

Quick walk to the Lighthouse, enjoying the view,

However, trying to know why the village was called like that, nobody was able to tell me. My initial guess was that there had to be some rock nearby in the shape of a Lion’s Head, but the locals I interviewed even told me that there was no such thing. Once back home, I asked the internets. I guess both my intuition and wikipedia were wrong, then? By the way, did you know that Lion’s Head was on the 45th parallel, halfway between the equator and the North pole?

Well, nevermind. After a quick lunch, I took the wheel again, enjoying the view as much as possible, impressed by the color of the water in the bay.

Bah, tant pis.

To be continued, in the Bruce Peninsula National Park…

When I checked my stats, I was in for a big surprise, today. From the usual 10-50 visitors I usually get every day, my stats rose to an astonishing 300 hits. On a single page. That was… weird. The page is this one.

And when I checked my RSS reader for daily stupid pictures and saw this, I immediately understood. Some people following that website didn’t understand the irony of the sign, then tried to google the words in foreign language, and if you search “zákaz tlumočeni“, with or without the accents, guess who’s coming in second position, right after a tweet?

It didn’t bring me any more followers, though. Guess people were pretty disappointed with what they read

But I’ll have to admit, a translated sign saying no translation is allowed is a pretty funny thing indeed.

In those situations, I’ll gladly go to the market while it’s still early, to avoid the crowds of elderly people and families of 8 that are found there from 10AM to 1PM. After 8 months here, I kinda know where to go when I don’t want to be charged for the cheese samples that I’m offered, or when I don’t want to buy vegetables that still have the price tag from the supermarket across the street.

And when it’s 8:30AM, with reusable bags full of fresh produce (local, though not organic), real cheese, and fresh meat, there’s nothing like the smell of warm baguettes filling up the empty streets to brighten your day. Did I mention that there are 5 bakeries in less than 500m, on my way to the market?

Once upon a time, I was thinking of building myself a website, that I could use to learn and experiment with technologies that are either new or unknown to me. It would be educational for myself, first of all, but also designed to be educational to whoever wants to learn. The website would be the result of my discoveries, and would also contain pages explaining how to achieve the same result.

Of course, it would reinvent the wheel a little, since most or all of the features I would want to put in it would already be available through existing platforms, but that’s not the point, it’s just for the fun of learning. As I said, educational. I was already building design diagrams in my mind, when it hit me square in the face: I legally can’t do that.

See, when you sign a contract, there’s usually a lot of clauses in tiny print. In my case, there are three very important sections that make it impossible for me to build such website, even in my spare time.

First, there’s the non-competition rule. Building such a website, I would provide knowledge to other people. That’s, like, free teaching. And as part of my job includes teaching, that’s a big no-no.

Then, there’s the confidentiality rule. To build the website, I would inevitably use knowledge that I gained while working for the company. Though I’m theoretically allowed to use my acquired knowledge in a subsequent job, using knowledge acquired at this job to build something on the side would be a breach, as the code would easily be available to anyone seeing the website. The confidentiality clauses are a bit of a grey area. It’s generally acknowledged that it is impossible for someone to “forget all that one has learned” during the job, before going on another job. It is then allowed to re-use knowledge learnt on the job, as long as you don’t use explicitly confidential information from your previous job in your current job.

Then, there’s the Intellectual Property stuff. My contract says that all my “Creations” that I make while on duty belong to the Company. All my “Creations” made off duty belong to myself. Example: My company asks me to write a new manual for one of the company’s products. The company owns Intellectual Property of the manual. During my free time, I write a novel. I keep Intellectual Property over my novel. However, all my “Software Creations”, regardless of whether I’m on or off duty, and regardless of whether my Company asked me to do it, belong to the Company. Meaning any piece of software I write during my free time becomes the de facto Intellectual Property of my employer. Meaning I can write the content of the website and they would still be my own (that’s a creation), but the website itself, its very code, would belong to the Company (that’s a Software Creation). Such clauses are usually written to avoid employees competing with the Company by rewriting during their free time the software that they created for their Company, and claim it their own.

Don’t think I didn’t read all those, or that I wasn’t aware of all those conditions and their implications when I signed the contract. I knew perfectly well what it meant (During my studies, I had a brief introduction to Labor laws and Intellectual Property in Software). I decided to sign regardless because one has to start with one job, and I made the bargain that the experience it would provide was going to make up for that contractual limitation. Looking back, I think that’s correct, my job has taught me a lot so far, and there’s still a lot that it can teach me!

I guess that my only solution left is to *think* the website in my head, and if I ever leave my company, and once the non-competition clause expires, I’ll put it up :p

It should come at no surprise to any of you that in this web 2.0 world, an increasing quantity of potential employers check the internets for information about job applicants. The official interviewed HR people on TV would usually say “you know, it’s ok if we see the guy drunk once or twice on his facebook page, they’re young, people are allowed to relax, but if the profile is filled with those, it doesn’t look very professional.”

Up until recently, my approach would have been “keep a low profile” and don’t get all traceable on the web. That’s one of the reasons why using my name, or even my company name, you can’t find this place. And also why using my nickname you can’t find my real name.

However, and with over 6 billion people on the planet, there had to be, somewhere, people with the same name as me. And believe it or not, but I think I found at least two other “me” on the web. Who are from France. And who work in software. And I also found one on facebook who uses a picture of himself posing on the beach as a profile picture.

Now, the part where it starts bothering me, is that if people start looking for me on the internets, they might find the wrong guy, and maybe the wrong idea as well.

And such mistakes actually happened before. Once, on linkedIn, a business-oriented networking site, I got a “friend request” from someone whom I had never heard of before, and who adressed me pretty informally, as if we were drinking buddies. And when I politely asked who he was, he turned all apesh*t on me and insulted me, until realizing that I was not the one he thought.

So what can I do about it? I don’t really want to be seen as “the dude posing half naked on the beach on his facebook profile”. But that’s only my opinion. I then thought that maybe I should make myself more visible under my own name, and get some control over this. “If someone is gonna try to check my online identity, I want them to clearly see the difference”. Problem is, that would be pretty unfair, wouldn’t it? I mean, what if suddenly I am the one more visible online, and what if that guy posing was actually a model, and the facebook page was his way of advertising himself Web 2.0 style, then I’d be ruining *his* reputation by giving the image of a boring, geeky, computer scientist. As much as I don’t want to be mistaken for anyone else, I think anyone else is entitled not to be mistaken for me.

I suppose, then, that my only chance is to make myself just visible enough online so that anyone looking for my name realizes that I’m not the only one with that name, and clearly looks no further. Which now leaves me with the dilemma of how much information I can leak out on the Internet to clearly indicate the non-uniqueness of my name on the web, without people mistaking me for the wrong me?

Last year, during oreneta’s yearly trip back to TO, we were supposed to meet at the best place in Toronto where you can have Phở. For any French people, the very very very distinctive sign on this restaurant is the usurpation of the Laughing Cow.

But as it appeared to me, it may not be obvious to anyone. And while trying to give each other distinctive signs of the place I was talking about, oreneta starting talking about “the restaurant with a cat on a chair”. While I was saying “the restaurant with a big red laughing cow’s head on the sign”. And I completely didn’t know what she was talking about. And she didn’t know what I was talking about either. So we ended up with each other’s contact info, just in case, and the address.

And while I was waiting (it was close to my work, I could get there quickly), there it was, nagging me, from way above my head:

No wonder I never noticed it before. I’m not looking *up* when I walk, but in front of me :p.

I’ve been trying very hard to remember the last time where I had at least two weeks off, really resting. And I think we can go back very far in time. Because, you know, you can’t feel like you’re on vacation if you only take one week off. It takes you one week to adjust to the “sweet vacation” state of mind, so if you have to go back to work right at that moment, that’s pretty useless.

Christmas 2008, I had around two weeks of vacation. But we were going to ski for one week, family time, so as fun as it may be, it’s not very relaxing. You have to wake up very early to go as soon as possible on the slopes, since the best snow is the morning one, the daily passes are so darn expensive, and it was only my fourth time ever going skiing so I had to make the best of it. I enjoyed it very much, but I can’t count that as relaxing vacation.

In 2007 and 2008, generally speaking, since I was in Canada, the amount of paid vacation I got was half the amount I had in France. And every bit of time off I had was usually spent going back to France, for a wedding, family reunions, and all that.

Summer 2006, I used up most of my vacation days, and most of my savings as well, by the way, for three weeks in the USA. Very nice, but it actually was one week of symposium for my ex-gf, and then a two week long road trip with one week of hikes in the Yellowstone. And since said ex-gf, in her careful planning of our program, didn’t realize the US road map she bought in France was in miles and not in kilometres, we pretty much had to rise and shine even before the sun did everyday.

Which brings us to Summer 2005, where it was the first time I even had paid vacation, and not the full amount since I started working in November 2004, instead of June 2004. Everything got pretty much used for one week in Brittanny, which was nice, but once again, I didn’t have much time to rest, thanks to the careful ex-gf planning. There were many things in the guide, and we had to do pretty much everything in it, following the exact itinerary on said guide.

Summer 2004, I was in my final internship, in my engineering school. No vacation time.

Été 2004, stage de fin d’études. Pas de vacances.

Summer 2003, I was in my second-year internship, in my engineering school. No vacation time.

Été 2003, stage de deuxième année. Pas de vacances.

Summer 2002, my first-year internship, in my engineering school, lasted only one month out of the two allowed. I actually *did* stay home, doing nothing.

Wow. So… basically, I’ve never had time off where I really did nothing for two weeks straight in all my working life, up until now. And the last time I did really nothing and rested for two weeks or more was… seven years ago!

Wow.

What about you? When was the last time you got some time off, and used it to do absolutely nothing?

Vacation is a good time to catch up with all the books I have been given and never quite found the time to read. And I just finished “The Wives of Bath”, from Wendy Holden. Here’s the official description:

Four parents-to-be seem ante-natally sorted. Flash Hugo and Amanda have booked a chic private clinic and royal maternity nurse. Right-on Jake and Alice want an all-natural home birth with whale music and tree-hugging nappies.
But nothing goes quite to plan. Amanda finds motherhood less glam than the stars make it look and disappears back to her career. Which leaves Hugo with the child and without a clue what to do.
Alice has problems too. Bringing up baby to Jake’s eco-fascist standards means home-made organic everything and a recycled cardboard cot.
Will nappiness bring happiness to anybody? Not before bedhopping spouses, beastly bosses and bitchy nursery mothers have all done their dreadful worst…

Well, it’s quite an unusual read for me, and pretty different from the usual Terry Pratchett I get to read once every couple of years. Imagine a romantic comedy, on a background of crying babies and couples having troubles… It was pretty funny to read, with some very predictable outcomes, at some point, and overall gave me the impression that it would be perfect on screen, with Hugh Grant, Renée Zellweger, Julia Roberts, and another charismatic romantic british-looking guy. Only thing, I am not sure exactly who I would see in which role… .

I’d say it was a quite refreshing chick-read. If you’re looking for tosterone-loaded action, though, I wouldn’t recomment it :p.

In France, Sales have a very specific meaning. Only during two very specific, government-issued time brackets is a shop allowed to go on sale, which is to sell products at a loss, to finish selling the surplus. Those are the winter and summer sales, aimed at selling as much as possible of the old collection before putting the new one on the shelves.

Double-unfortunately for me, I couldn’t do the summer sales this year. I say double-unfortunately, because 1) I couldn’t do the summer sales from lack of time and shops being closed whenever I left the office, and 2) my shoes are litterally dying on me. All I have left in working order is a pair of army boots (not suitable for summer and airport security-checks), sport shoes, and fancy wedding/christening/whatever big occasion shoes, that I would like to keep as long as possible.

I did have time to see a few prices on the shop windows on my way to work, though. Oddly enough, after the end of the sales period, I could see the same shoes, at the same shop, proposed for the sales prices, renamed under the “Sunny Prices”. Which kinda makes me think that the shop never even bother to bid its margins goodbye, and never tried to sell the surplus without making profit, just saying “On sale” to try to get more gullible buyers to buy there. And I incidentally saw some shoes that looked nice, however the price was a little too much for what I usually spend on shoes, especially considering their ever shortening lifespan.

And then, I thought: “Hey, isn’t Bat’a originally from Czech Republic? Maybe if I look during my holidays I’ll find something cheaper.” And off I went to a mall on the outskirts of Prague, to a Bat’a store.

Unfortunately for me, all men collections start at size 40, which is one size above mine (it really sucks to be a midget). Though the size 40 was not that bad. Apparently, the shoes were still on sale there, as I found two pairs that were CZK 1000 (€38) instead of CZK 1400 (€55). And then, when I tried to purchase them, the cashier said something that I thought was directed at her colleague counting socks 2 meters away. It is only when she looked at me with a “so, what do you say, mister?” face that I understood that she was talking to me.

(lit: you don’t understand Czech?)
- ne… nic moc… trošku (lit: no… not much… a little)

Then followed an awkward moment where the cashier pointed at a stand of girly magazines that appeared to hold within them a magic card that gave some kind of discount on the shoes. I think I had to buy the magazine first, though. I kinda nodded, and she took the magazine off the stand, and as soon as I had paid for it, opened it, took some card, and it appeared to give me 50% off the second pair of shoes.

So in the end, with a lot of sweat, awkwardness, and finger pointing, I ended up paying CZK 1500 (€58) for two pair of shoes, that would have cost me CZK 2800 (€108) without discount, and would actually be sold for €120 in France (the price tag also showed euro prices, a little higher than the current exchange rate…).

Now, I hope the shoes will last longer than the last ones I bought…

Last day of my trip to Halifax, after a quick look at the Farmer’s market, and its tasty looking breads,

let’s all hop on the “small” rental car (I have yet to find a universe where the Dodge Avenger qualifies as a “compact” car), set up the GPS, and let’s go to Peggy’s Cove

Peggy’s Cove is just a few kilometers away from Halifax, and is probably one of the most visited places in the area. I suppose the wonderful scenery has something to do with it.

I was lucky enough to find some blooming trilliums. By the way, did you know that the White Trillium is the symbol of Ontario?

If you were looking for a large cosmopolitan city, Peggy’s Cove and its estimated population of 50 will probably disappoint you. If you were looking for a postcard-like view of a fishermen’s village on the Atlantic, then you’re right on the spot…

While going to the Light House, one can see a peculiar sculpture, made in a granite rock in a garden. That’s the Fisherman’s monument, by William E. de Garthe, a Finlandian sculptor and artist who lived most of his life in Peggy’s Cove. He had this big block of granite protruding in his garden, and didn’t know what to do with it, so he set off to sculpt a dedication to all the arts and crafts of the sea harvesters.

Unfortunately, after only a couple of Crab Cakes, the mist started to rise, giving ghostly looks to the Lighthouse and the Atlantic…

And while I could watch the waves clash on the rocks for hours,

A boat leaving took me out of my reveries…

That was a pretty nice week-end, but the plane’s waiting for me, and I’ve got to go back to work…

It’s not Tadoussac, but that’ll do. When the city is a harbour, you gotta go on a boat, and try some whale watching, don’t you? I have to admit that there were really nice sailboats over there…

There also was one that really looked like fun, but I’m not sure it was setting out for whale watching…

So instead, let’s take a walk on the boardwalk, and try to get on one of those pricey whale-watching tours, with absolutely no guarantee of seeing whales, and no refund in case of no sighting. Nevermind, let’s take our chances there. We quickly pass Georges Island and its lighthouse,

only to be followed by a bunch of seagulls hoping we’ll leave a trail of dead fish behind us.

And it is only after one long hour that we spot something different from a jellyfish, a plastic bag, dead fish, or a seagull…

Yes, if you click on the picture, and zoom like crazy, you will recognize a seal. A bit disappointed from the lack of whales that day, but a seal’s better than nothing…

To be continued…

À suivre…

No, I don’t have a year full of backlog in terms of travels and picture and stuff.

OK, maybe I have. So hop in the Bombardier Q400, I’m taking you all to Halifax, Nova Scotia!

And here we go for three days of Nova Scotian fun. Just like Québec, Halifax has its own citadel, as you can see on the picture below:

And if I had to post an ad for it, it would be something along the lines of… “Citadel, Mint condition, Brand New In Box, never used for battle, great for historic reconstitutions, comes with a Noon Gun in working order”.

That’s the thing. It took more than twenty years to build it, but by the time it was built, it was already rendered obsolete by powerful rifled guns in the 1860s. So nowadays it is more like a tourist attraction with many historic reconstitutions of how life could be when it was still in use.

It’s also possible to visit the dorms (but I don’t think they had pajama parties in those…).

But the most important attraction is probably the Noon Gun, which, according to its name, is fired every day at Noon. No exceptions outside of Christmas Day. You can see them rehearse, twice, thrice under the blazing sun,

And then you can see and hear the real deal. Of course, there’s a security perimeter that is installed, and everything. It’s pretty impressive, and that’s probably why it is so pupular

And do you know what the unofficial use of the Noon Gun has been ever since it’s been fired? Tell Haligonians that it’s time for lunch! Especially since when the citadel was built, owning a watch was not exactly common.

And around the citadel, pretty much everything was rythmed by music, with different tunes used to pass different orders and mark different times.

To be continued…

À suivre…

I was half lucky last Friday. And by half lucky, I mean “the plane was delayed from one hour and a half, but when we finally arrived, my luggage was the third to arrive on the conveyor belt”.

In the meantime, I still don’t understand people who applause at every landing. Especially when takeoff was shaky, there were only 5 minutes of turbulences, and landing was… well… like any other old 737 landing. Do those people also applause when the RER arrives safely at its destination? Or when the car stops? I’d expect at least some consistency there…

I’m not sure I understand the real world anymore. First, Bankruptcy turns out to be a good thing, and now, inflation. I thought inflation was the rise in prices for goods and services. That’s what we were taught in school, back then. Everywhere in the media, we’re told that inflation in France is now negative. That would mean that prices are decreasing, right? Then why is EDF getting an increase in hydro tariffs of 1.9%? Why does my monthly pass for public transit increase on July 1st? Why did the daily price for the parking next to my home go from €7.50 to €12 last month?

And for a moment, I thought I was good at maths…
